Health Science Academy

Description of program

This program introduces students to a wide range of health careers and allows them to concentrate their high school coursework in the direction of a potential career in health science. Integrated academics combined with healthcare knowledge and skills provide the framework for a strong healthcare delivery system in the 21st century. It is recommended for students who want to prepare for further study in an array of health-related fields at the postsecondary level. Students who advance in the program will do internships completed in a hospital, extended-care facility, rehabilitation center, medical office, imagery laboratory, or other healthcare facility. Career and technical student organizations are integral, co-curricular components of each career and technical education course. These organizations serve to enhance classroom instruction while helping students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Clinical Laboratory Technician, Dental Assistant/Hygienist, Dentist, Dietitian, Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Assistant, Occupational Therapist/Assistant, Optometrist, Pharmacist, Phlebotomist, Physical Therapist/Assistant, Physician, Physician Assistant, Registered Nurse, Radiologic Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, Veterinarian, Veterinarian Technologist/Technician, and many more.

Coursework and descriptions

Foundations of Health Science (prerequisite for all other Health Science courses; introduces students to a wide range of health careers)

Health Science Internship (limited to students in grades 11 and 12 and includes theory and lab components; completed in a health care facility)

Medical Terminology (incorporates medical terminology with anatomy and physiology and the disease process to teach the language of medicine)
